Intensive course description:
Today’s information landscape is dominated by negative news: wars, ecological crises, inequality, injustice. This constant exposure shapes a collective emotional state marked by anxiety, helplessness, and fatigue.
The goal of this workshop is to explore how graphic design can identify, construct, and communicate evidence-based hope – grounded in real-world developments, initiatives, and possibilities that demonstrate positive change is not only possible, but already happening.
We are surrounded by narratives of collapse. Some of them are true. Most of them are incomplete. This workshop is not about positivity. It’s about taking control of the story.
Design posters that expose, question, and rebuild how we see the world –
not by ignoring problems, but by revealing where change is already happening.

The course is organized in collaboration with the Lahti International Poster Triennial and partnering design universities.
The theme in this year’s summer school is ‘Designing Hope’. Where do you see hopeful glimmers? Or would you rather investigate the threshold of hope/hopelessness?
Summer school provides a platform for investigating how poster design can visualise societal issues and future possibilities—through composition, visual storytelling, and visual influence.
The final posters will be exhibited at the end of the course in both Lithuania and Finland. One exhibition will take place immediately after the workshop in Vilnius, and another will be organised in Lahti, in early October.
IMPORTANT: Applicants are expected to check that participation in the intensive course will not clash with scheduled activities in their home academies, BEFORE submitting their application.
About the location:
This intensive course will take place at the Nida Art Colony (NAC). It is a resourceful platform, which initiates art, education, and research projects, and aims to generate a creative confluence of academic and non-academic education, artistic and scientific practice. It prioritises contemporary art, design, and research projects on the topics of a greener future. NAC is a perfect place to discuss questions of sustainability, dialogue
between (human) culture and (non-human) nature, and collaboration between incoming artists.
The workshop is funded under the Nordplus/CIRRUS network framework.
